The Edmonton Oilers have had 18 head coaches since the franchise moved from the World Hockey Association to the National Hockey League in 1979-80 — and Mike Babcock is now the 19th.
It was widely expected that general manager Stan Bowman would announce Babcock’s hiring this week after the NHL completed its review on the controversial bench boss, and that happened on Tuesday morning.
The 63-year-old has a 700-418-183 regular-season coaching record over parts of 17 NHL seasons and 1,301 games. He has coached the Detroit Red Wings to a Stanley Cup championship in 2008, as well as leading Team Canada to a pair of Olympic golds.
More to come.
