The reality of Giannis Antetokounmpo leaving the Milwaukee Bucks remained difficult to process even for those closest to the former franchise cornerstone.
Following the Miami Heat’s blockbuster acquisition of Antetokounmpo, The Athletic’s Eric Nehm revealed that members of the two-time MVP’s inner circle spent much of the past several months struggling to comprehend how the relationship between the superstar and the Bucks had reached a point where a trade became inevitable.
“The idea that Giannis Antetokounmpo is going to wear a different jersey is just … wild,” Nehm wrote.
“It’s hard to comprehend. It’s just not something that you could imagine if you’ve followed his career in Milwaukee or, in my case, covered him here for most of that time.”
Antetokounmpo spent 13 seasons with the Bucks after being selected with the 15th overall pick in the 2013 NBA Draft. During that span, he transformed from a raw prospect into one of the most accomplished players in franchise history.
The 10-time All-Star, two-time MVP, two-time Defensive Player of the Year and 2021 NBA champion helped deliver Milwaukee’s first NBA title in 50 years and became synonymous with the organization throughout his tenure.
According to Nehm, the possibility of Antetokounmpo being traded was once viewed as almost unimaginable by those around him.
“During the last six months, if you’ve spoken to people in his inner circle, the sentiment has largely been, basically, how the f— did we get here?” Nehm wrote.
“How did we arrive at a place where the Bucks want to trade their most accomplished player?”

Ultimately, that question became reality when Milwaukee agreed to send Antetokounmpo to Miami in one of the most significant trades in recent NBA history.
“But here we indeed are: The Bucks are trading the greatest player in franchise history to the Miami Heat after 13 years and 979 games,” Nehm wrote.
The trade officially ends one of the most successful player-franchise partnerships of the modern era. Antetokounmpo leaves Milwaukee as the organization’s all-time leader in numerous statistical categories and as the player most responsible for returning the franchise to championship relevance.
For the Heat, the acquisition represents a franchise-altering move that immediately elevates expectations in the Eastern Conference. For Milwaukee, it signals the beginning of a new chapter following the departure of the most accomplished player the franchise has ever employed.
As Nehm noted, the move remains difficult to fully comprehend given Antetokounmpo’s long-standing connection to the city and organization. Yet after months of speculation, the unthinkable has officially become reality.
