Blue Jays’ starting pitching trade deadline need comes with twist

The Toronto Blue Jays have slowly but steadily been climbing the standings in the AL, recently reaching the .500 mark at 39-39 after a home win over the Houston Astros. The Blue Jays have largely had a disappointing season this year on the heels of last year’s trip to the World Series, but there is still plenty of time for them to get back into the postseason and give themselves a chance at revenge.

The MLB trade deadline is just over a month away, and recently, Blue Jays general manager Ross Atkins revealed what he believes to be one of the team’s biggest needs heading into the rest of the season.

“Asked about Trade Deadline needs, Ross Atkins pointed to starting pitching. In a perfect world, optionable staring pitching, which is hard to find. I still think that starters with control beyond 2026 make the most sense for the #BlueJays, if possible,” reported Blue Jays insider Keegan Matheson of MLB.com on X, formerly Twitter.

Pitching has been a bit of an adventure for the Blue Jays so far in 2026, with veteran Max Scherzer and numerous others finding themselves in and out of the lineup due to injury concerns. The biggest name on the trade market is Detroit Tigers ace Tarik Skubal, but at this point, it doesn’t seem likely that the Blue Jays will be among those making the biggest offers for the star.

As Matheson pointed out, bringing in someone who is under contract beyond this season would do a lot to help Toronto’s stability moving forward.

In any case, the Blue Jays will once again take on the Astros on Tuesday afternoon at home.
