The sports world is still reeling after the Miami Heat made the blockbuster trade to acquire Giannis Antetokounmpo and Bobby Portis Jr. from the Milwaukee Bucks, but the work is not done in South Beach. As the Heat now look for the next moves to make after getting Antetokounmpo, this NBA insider gives insight into the player on the team that could give them a need.
While an expected starting frontcourt of Antetokounmpo and Bam Adebayo is exciting to any Miami fans, the team has to address its shooting need, especially with Norman Powell’s status with the team up in the air. Still needing shooting in its depth, Jake Fischer writes for The Stein Line that Heat forward Nikola Jovic could be moved “to try to acquire some shooting.”
“It has also been suggested that Miami could look now to move Nikola Jović to try to acquire some shooting to help space the floor for Antetokounmpo and his new frontcourt sidekick Bam Adebayo,” Fischer wrote.
A look at the Heat’s roster with Antetokounmpo
At the moment, Antetokounmpo joins a Miami roster that has, barring contract and free agency decisions, Adebayo, Powell, Portis, Jovic, Andrew Wiggins, Davion Mitchell, Pelle Larsson, Dru Smith, Keshad Johnson, and Myron Gardner, and others. In the blockbuster deal for Antetokounmpo, the Heat traded star Tyler Herro, young center Kel’el Ware, forward Jaime Jaquez Jr., and 20-year-old guard Kasparas Jakucionis.
There is no doubt that Miami getting their “whale” of a superstar in Antetokounmpo is a giant step in the right direction, but the roster construction around it is almost as important. Getting more shooting in the backcourt is needed, as there could be cheaper options out there in free agency, like Luke Kennard, Gary Trent Jr., Tim Hardaway Jr., and others.
At any rate, it remains to be seen how the Heat addresses the need for shooting and other weaknesses, but the foundation is set with Antetokounmpo, Adebayo, and others. Miami is looking to improve after finishing with a 43-39 record, which put them 10th in the East and missing the playoffs for the first time since 2019.
