Aroldis Chapman’s blunt reaction to meltdown not seen in nearly a year

The Boston Red Sox suffered a 3-2 loss to the Colorado Rockies on Monday at Coors Field in Denver. Closer Aroldis Chapman gave up four hits in the 9th inning and a walk-off triple by Jake McCarthy, leading to a blown save.

It marked the first time in a year that Chapman had blown a lead. After the game, Chapman was candid when reflecting upon the loss as he sat in his uniform in the locker room 42 minutes after the game, per Tim Healey of The Boston Globe.

Chapman said that his pitches weren’t there.

“In the moment of truth, the balls went to the corners,” Chapman said.

The last blown save by Chapman was on July 23, 2025, against the Philadelphia Phillies. He gave up one run on one hit, forcing the game into extra innings. Ultimately, Boston went on to win 9-8.

Since then, Chapman accumulated 46 consecutive opportunities without giving up a save. He also recorded 29 consecutive saves over the course of 334 days.

Currently, Chapman is 0-3 with a 2.08 ERA, along with 14 saves and 29 strikeouts. The Red Sox are 31-45 and in last place in the American League East Division.

Chapman has been with the Red Sox since 2025. Lately, there have been rumors that he will be traded later on in the season.

Altogether, Chapman has 381 career saves and a save percentage of 78%.

The Red Sox will continue their three-game series against the Rockies on Tuesday and conclude on Wednesday. Afterward, they will head back home to begin a four-game series against their long-time rival, the New York Yankees, from Thursday to Sunday.
