NBA rumors: St. John’s star drawing interest from Celtics, Knicks, Lakers

With the Boston Celtics missing on trading for Giannis Antetokounmpo, the team now focuses on the 2026 NBA Draft, which starts on Tuesday night. As rumors will surround the Celtics ahead of the NBA Draft and this offseason, there is one player from the St. John’s basketball program that interests them, as well as the Los Angeles Lakers and the New York Knicks.

ClutchPoints’ NBA insider Brett Siegel spoke about the Celtics in the last mock draft ahead of Tuesday, and had the team taking Red Storm big man Zubu Ejiofor. Siegel would say that the team is looking to be “targeting frontcourt help in this year’s draft and have been exploring ways to possibly jump into the 17-to-22 region of the first round.”

While the target for Boston if they trade up could be Houston’s Chris Cenac Jr., Ejiofor at No. 27 is very much on the table to be the pick.

The Celtics, the Lakers, and the Knicks have interest in Zuby Ejiofor

Siegel would continue talking about what the Celtics could do at No. 27 and how Ejiofor could be the pick, citing him as a “workhorse whose relentless energy and character make him an obvious fit” for any franchise. The insider would here mention that the NBA champions, the Knicks and the Lakers, have shown interest in Ejiofor, also saying that while his six-foot, eight-inch frame is undersized, he compared him to having a “Draymond Green-like role.”

“Ejiofor is a very solid passer, and he has no problem operating either on the perimeter or in the low post. Defensively, Ejiofor is as good as they get in this draft class, and he would provide immediate depth for the Celtics’ bench,” Siegel wrote about Ejiofor.

At any rate, it remains to be seen what Boston, New York, and Los Angeles do at each of their picks for the 2026 NBA Draft, which will happen on Tuesday night.
