Panthers’ Brady Tkachuk gets real on Senators trade request

The first bombshell trade of the NHL offseason has come and gone, with former Ottawa Senators captain Brady Tkachuk being reunited with brother Matthew and the Florida Panthers on Sunday evening.

Tkachuk now joins a powerhouse Panthers team that has won two of the last four Stanley Cups, and will be well-positioned to make another deep run next spring.

The 26-year-old shed some light on his decision during his introductory press conference on Tuesday.

“There’s definitely a lot of different things that have happened throughout my time there, and for me I think it was just time for the next chapter,” Tkachuk told reporters. “It was something that it wasn’t an easy decision, it was something that I took a little bit more time than what’s been out there to make that decision.”

The Olympic gold medallist added: “It was a very hard decision, there’s a lot more things that go into it but for me now it’s very thankful for what they’ve done for me, not just as a player but molded me into the human that I am today, and the person I am today, and that is something I can carry into the future.”

Tkachuk spent the first eight seasons of his career in Canada’s capital after being selected fourth overall in the 2018 NHL Draft. He endured six seasons without playoff hockey before helping lead the Senators back to the dance in 2024-25.

They were defeated in six games by the Toronto Maple Leafs that spring, and were swept by the eventual champion Carolina Hurricanes in the first round back in April.

Tkachuk has two seasons remaining on a contract that will pay him just over $8.2 million per year. Tkachuk is expected to play a prominent role in Florida’s top six alongside a roster that already features several established stars.

Daily Faceoff already projects him playing on the second line with brother Matthew and Sam Bennett, along with the first powerplay unit.

The trade makes the rich even richer, and the Panthers have had a full offseason to rest and recover after advancing to back-to-back-to-back Stanley Cup Finals between 2023-25.

It’ll be intriguing to see if Florida can continue its dynasty in 2026-27 — help Brady capture the first ring of his career in the process.
