Devils trade former No. 2 overall pick to Flames

There’s another big trade going down in the NHL. The New Jersey Devils are trading defenseman Simon Nemec to the Calgary Flames, per TSN insider Pierre LeBrun. Nemec was the no. 2 overall pick in the 2022 NHL Draft.

The Devils had a disappointing 2025-26 season. New Jersey missed the Stanley Cup Playoffs, and struggled to score goals. New Jersey scored just 230 goals on the season.

Nemec had been the subject of trade rumors in recent weeks. He posted 26 points for New Jersey during this last campaign. He joins now a Flames team that is also coming off a tough year. Calgary posted just 77 points during the 2025-26 season.

Nemec has played in 155 career regular-season games in the NHL. A native of Slovakia, he has also appeared in a lot of games for his home country.

“The 22-year-old also represented Slovakia at the 2026 Milano Cortina Olympics, registering two assists while skating in all six of Slovakia’s contests throughout the tournament, helping them finish in fourth place. He has now represented his nation at two different Olympic games, helping Slovakia win Bronze at the 2022 Beijing Olympics,” NHL.com reported.

This deal will also send New Jersey winger Maxim Tsyplakov to Calgary. In return, New Jersey is getting quite a few prospects.

“A conditional 2027 first-round pick (VGK), a conditional 2028 first-round pick (COL), a 2026 second-round pick (NYR) and defenceman Etienne Morin. Both conditional first-round picks are top 10 protected,” NHL.com added.

Both the Flames and Devils missed this year’s Stanley Cup Playoffs. Calgary last made the postseason in 2022. New Jersey meanwhile last went to the postseason in 2025.
