Mets’ David Stearns puts every pitcher on watch with ‘turn-by-turn’ truth bomb

Not much has gone right for the New York Mets during the 2026 season. Their roster could look much different once the trade deadline passes.

Until then, and potentially beyond, all Mets pitchers must be on high alert. They’re being evaluated start-by-start, according to president of baseball operations David Stearns, via SNY.

“In terms of our rotation, it’s a turn-by-turn evaluation,” Stearns said. “We do need to see production there. We need to figure out a way to get ourselves later into games and competitive positions. I call it a turn-by-turn evaluation of where we’re going to go start to start.”

Entering Tuesday, the Mets rank 14th in the league with their 4.08 ERA. There are clearly signs of strength, as New York ranks sixth in strike outs (695) and batting average against (.233). However, with an overall record of 34-43, the Mets know they need improvement in all aspects.

Leading the way has been Nolan McLean, who holds a 3.67 ERA over his 15 starts. However, Freddy Peralta has a 4.83 ERA over his 16 starts while Kodai Senga has a 9.00 ERA over his six. David Peterson has an 6.09 ERA through 16 appearances.

The Mets have been crippled by injuries as Clay Holmes and Christian Scott are both on the injured list. New York has further pitching firepower at the minor league level with names like Jonah Tong and Jack Wenniger. Ultimately, the Mets have numerous options when it comes to pitch. And their mix could be further altered depending on how New York approaches the trade deadline.

Whoever is in the rotation though will be under the microscope. Stearns and the Mets won’t settle for their current output.
