How Buster Posey addressed questions about Giants’ Pride Night controversy

The San Francisco Giants are not playing well this season. There is seemingly some brewing drama with Rafael Devers and manager Tony Vitello. The Giants have decisions to make before the MLB trade deadline. Yet, the talking point that has received more attention than any of those topics is what occurred during the Giants’ recent Pride Night and the reactions since.

For those who may have missed what occurred, the Giants had their players wear hats with their logo covered with the rainbow during their recent Pride Night. Multiple Giants pitchers decided to either write Bible verses on the caps or to simply wear the team’s normal hat instead. One pitcher, Landen Roupp, wrote Genesis 9:12-16 on his hat, which is a passage of the Bible that talks about God’s covenant to never flood the earth again, which is something the rainbow symbolizes in Christianity.

The Giants’ hurlers are not the first players to take this approach on Pride Night. Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Blake Treinen did not wear the Dodgers’ rainbow cap on their Pride Night, while future Hall of Famer Clayton Kershaw also wrote a Bible verse on his hat in the past.

Some have praised the pitchers while others have criticized them. It has become an extremely popular subject in recent weeks, so it was not surprising that Giants president of baseball operations Buster Posey was asked about the Pride Night controversy while speaking to reporters on Tuesday.

According to Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle, Posey did not directly answer the questions and asked for “baseball questions only.” However, he did share a comment about the overall situation, via Shayna Rubin of the San Francisco Chronicle.

“I understand that there’s strong feelings on this topic,” Posey said. “There’s differing perspectives, and out of respect to everybody involved, it’s not something that I’m going to revisit. I understand that some fans are upset and frustrated, and I can promise you this is something that we’ve talked about a lot internally and will continue to do so.”

After MLB sent a warning about violating league uniform regulations following what occurred with the Giants pitchers, commissioner Rob Manfred later said the players will not be fined or disciplined.
