The Washington Capitals and St Louis Blues have made a trade, which sends Jordan Kyrou to the nation’s capital. After nearly trading the forward at the trade deadline, St Louis decided to make the move right before the draft. Kyrou has five years left at $8.125 million per season. Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman broke the trade.
“Jordan Kyrou is being traded to Washington,” Friedman reported. “16, Connor McMichael and Milton Gastrin.”
The Blues received the 16th overall pick, restricted free agent Connor McMichael, and Milton Gastrin. The Blues now have four picks in Friday’s first round. They will use their own pick at 11, the Detroit Red Wings’ pick at 15, the Capitals’ selection at 16, and the Colorado Avalanche’s pick at 29.
Kyrou blossomed into a star with the Blues, putting together three consecutive 30-goal seasons. But last year, he struggled, scoring just 18 goals in 72 games. With Alex Ovechkin not under contract and an extra first-rounder from the John Carlson trade, Washington took a big swing to add scoring to the lineup. They hope that a dreadful Blues team was the reason for Kyrou’s downtick in 2025-26.
McMichael has been a solid middle-six forward for the Capitals for the past three years. His career year was 2024-25, when he netted 26 goals and added 31 assists. He needs a new contract before next season, so the Blues have to manage that. But they have plenty of space to deal with, so that should be easy to get done.
Gastrin was taken by the Capitals in the second round last year and had a solid age-19 season. He scored 24 points in 39 games in the pro league in Sweden, but did not play in the AHL. Now, he joins the Blues’ system, which provides a clearer path to the league.
Will the Blues trade Robert Thomas before Friday’s first round? Will they use all four of their picks?
