Jerry Stackhouse floats two NBA stars who can make Warriors title contenders originally appeared on NBC Sports Bay Area
Over the last three seasons, the Warriors have demonstrated that their current roster is not championship-caliber.
Former Golden State assistant coach Jerry Stackhouse shared on FanDuel TV’s “Run It Back” which two NBA stars could lighten the load for Steph Curry and bring the organization back to the top of the mountain.
“I’ve been hearing Kawhi [Leonard],” Stackhouse stated. “You’ve been hearing Lebron [James]. Maybe getting a piece like that can rejuvenate everybody and can fill in the gaps.”
The Warriors have said it themselves, they are a fading dynasty. Staying competitive, and competing for a title is tough when your best player is nearing his 40s.
“Steph’s going to be 39 this year and Father Time is undefeated,” Stackhouse said. “You have to find a way for him to be a compliment, not be the guy that you’re solely depending on.”
If there’s any way to have Curry as the No. 2 option, that would mean the roster would be revamped, to say the least. One piece to the puzzle that currently is unclear is Jimmy Butler, who tore his ACL back in January.
“Jimmy’s not going to be a part of the picture,” Stackhouse continued. “Even if he comes back, he’s going to be on a minutes restriction. You’ve got to find some consistency, and I think that’s going to be the challenge for the Warriors.”
Another challenge entering the offseason was the future of head coach Steve Kerr. There was a real chance that Kerr had coached his last game with Golden State before signing his new two-year deal.
“That was tough because you didn’t know what was going to happen,” Stackhouse stated. “I don’t even think Steve knew what was going to happen.”
With Kerr back and his contract lining up with Curry’s, these final two years truly feel like a “Last Dance” of sorts. One thing is for certain: The Warriors need more firepower to add to their core if they want to secure their fifth ring.
