While some trade rumors involving Minnesota Twins star Byron Buxton have swirled in recent weeks, it seems as if a deal is unlikely to come to fruition. Buxton has said he does not care about the trade rumors and he also has a no-trade clause. On Tuesday, Twins general manager Jeremy Zoll confirmed the team is not planning to move the superstar, via Mark Feinsand of MLB.com.
“We have no plans to trade Byron,” Zoll said. “It’s not something we’re exploring. It’s not something we plan to explore.”
While Joe Ryan and Royce Lewis still could be moved, Buxton is likely going to remain in Minnesota past the trade deadline barring unforeseen circumstances.
Buxton, 32, is hitting .275/.333/.596 across 68 games played so far this season. The slugger has also recorded a league leading 25 home runs. Buxton looks like a potential American League MVP candidate at the moment. While the Twins have endured an up and down season, Buxton is playing at a high level.
At 38-42, Minnesota could still end up selling before the upcoming MLB trade deadline despite currently being in third place and sitting only 3.5 games back of first place in the American League Central standings. The Twins’ roster realistically is not built to make a deep postseason run. They could look to trade other stars to build a contender around Buxton for the future. Byron Buxton is under contract through the 2028 season.
For now, Minnesota and Buxton are focused on their game on Tuesday night against the Los Angeles Dodgers.
