Red Sox’s Marcelo Mayer injury update announced before Rockies game

Boston Red Sox infielder Marcelo Mayer has been no stranger to injuries throughout his MLB career. Before Tuesday’s game against the Colorado Rockies, it was announced he is dealing with another one.

After recently fouling a pitch off of it, Mayer is now dealing with a sore left foot and has been walking with a limp, via Tim Healey of the Boston Globe. He is out of the lineup on Tuesday, with Andruw Monasterio handling shortstop and batting seventh.

There is no word on the severity of Mayer’s injury. For now, he just appears to have a sore foot. But if he is forced to miss any more time, the Red Sox will have to take things more seriously. In a down year, the franchise wants to see exactly what they have in the infielder.

Thus far though, the former top prospect has struggled to live up to his billing. In his 68 games during the 2026 season, Mayer has hit .221 with three home runs, 22 RBIs and three stolen bases. His 112 games with the Red Sox have produced a .224 batting average with seven home runs, 32 RBIs and three steals.

Only 23-years-old, Mayer still offers plenty of potential. He ranked as the top overall prospect in Boston’s organization and the 15th-best in all of baseball as recently as 2024, via MLB Pipeline. The Red Sox are at least hoping he pans out long-term.

But to do so, Mayer must be on the diamond. And at least on Tuesday, he won’t be. The Red Sox are sure to release further information once available.
