David Beckham in deep thought watching England-Ghana at World Cup

England took on Ghana in its second match of the World Cup 2026, with former England superstar David Beckham looking on. The game ended in a 0-0 draw, which Beckham may have predicted early in the match. Beckham looked pensive and deep in thought when cameras caught him just shy of the 30-minute mark.

Beckham may have known what was coming as England struggled to break down Ghana’s tough, organized defense. While the Three Lions did get some chances, there were few good ones throughout the 90 minutes. On the flip side, while Ghana did produce a lot of action at their offensive end, they did have some dangerous breaks and some close calls as England continually pushed forward to try and get the deciding goal.

Ultimately, England is still in good shape to take first place in Group L, but this loss did highlight some of the team’s weaknesses.

David Beckham may not have been thinking of the 2026 England World Cup squad at all, though. The former England captain made 115 appearances for the Three Lions and played in three World Cups. And if you know England hasn’t won the tournament since 1966, you know each of Beckham’s experiences didn’t end well.

In 1998, manager Glenn Hoddle benched him early on for a lack of focus. He played in the last game of the Group Stage and in the Round of 16, where he made one of the defining plays of his career. Beckham was red-carded for a foul on Argentina’s Diego Simeone, and England lost in a shootout.

In 2002, England reached the quarterfinals but lost to Brazil, with Beckham’s lackluster defense (at least in part) blamed for the final goal. And in 2006, while he became the first English player to score in three World Cups, he was sick and injured toward the end of the tournament, and this team again exited in the quarterfinals, this time to Portugal.
