Blue Jays’ intriguing trend ends in high-scoring loss to Astros

Third baseman Kazuma Okamoto has been a key force behind the Toronto Blue Jays’ offense in 2026. That remained true in their Tuesday matchup against the Houston Astros.

The only problem was the fact Toronto came away with a 9-7 extra innings loss. It was the first time the Blue Jays have been defeated this season when Okamoto records three or more RBIs, via StatMuse.

After getting out to a 4-0 deficit through four innings, the Blue Jays marched back to take a 6-4 lead in the bottom of the eighth. It was a two-run Okamoto single that gave Toronto the advantage. However, Houston wouldn’t go down fighting, tying things up in the ninth and eventually taking the lead in the 11th. Okamoto brought in a run via a single in the 11th, but it wasn’t enough.

Overall, the third baseman went 3-4 with a run scored alongside his three RBIs. While it wasn’t enough for a win, Tuesday’s performance was just another reminder of how dominant Okamoto has been in his MLB debut.

Through his first 77 games, the third baseman is hitting .241 with 17 home runs and 49 RBIs. He rank third amongst all rookies in home runs and RBIs. Furthermore, he entered Tuesday leading the Blue Jays in both categories.

The only thing the Blue Jays wish is that they’re able to convert more of Okamoto’s performances into wins. Their latest loss dropped them to 39-40 on the season, eight games back in the AL East. Still, as Toronto tries to climb back into playoff contention, they know they’re a stronger team with Okamoto in the lineup.
