The Chicago Blackhawks and Buffalo Sabres are working toward a blockbuster trade on a busy day in the NHL. After Jordan Kyrou and William Eklund were moved, a defenseman is now headed west. The Blackhawks are working toward a trade for Sabres defenseman Bowen Byram that involves the number four overall pick. Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman and insider Frank Seravalli both reported on the news.
Friedman was the first to connect Byram and the Blackhawks. “It sounds like talks are intensifying between Buffalo and Chicago involving Bowen Byram.”
Seravalli then started to piece together the package, “Sources say the Sabres are in the process of acquiring the No. 4 overall pick in Friday night’s [NHL Draft] from the Blackhawks as part of the deal for Bowen Byram. Deal isn’t done quite yet.”
The Blackhawks had the second-worst record in the league last year, but did not win the NHL Draft Lottery. They moved down two spots, watching the Toronto Maple Leafs and San Jose Sharks fly past them. Now, after years of selecting high in the draft, the Blackhawks are cashing in a valuable chip to improve the defense.
