How AJ Dybantsa fits with Anthony Davis, Trae Young on Wizards

It’s officially official: AJ Dybantsa is a member of the Washington Wizards. Dybantsa was the clear frontrunner to be the first overall pick in the 2026 NBA Draft. On Tuesday night, Washington made the obvious choice by picking the former BYU standout with their pick.

Dybantsa will be joining an intriguing team in the Wizards. Washington made a few interesting moves last season by bringing in veterans Trae Young and Anthony Davis to complement their young core of Alex Sarr, Keyshawn George, and Tre Johnson. How well will the incoming rookie complement his new team? Let’s take a look.

What makes Dybantsa such a special player is his scoring ability. One of the best volume scorers in the nation, the BYU product led the entire NCAA with 25.5 points per game on 51% shooting from the field. That scoring prowess will be a huge boon to the Wizards, who struggled heavily last season in that department. They were 25th in the league in scoring with just 112.9 points per game.

Of course, Dybantsa will face much stiffer competition in the NBA compared to the NCAA. While he stands at a solid 6’9 with a 7’0 wingspan, he won’t be as physically dominant compared to the pros. We can definitely expect his scoring and efficiency to drop. What the Wizards will provide, though, are a lot of good players to take the pressure off of their star rookie.

Young will, of course, lead and conduct the offense. A multi-time All-Star himself, the Wizards guard commands a ton of attention with his scoring, something that he leverages perfectly by distributing the rock. Unlike the previous first overall pick, Cooper Flagg, Dybantsa won’t be tasked to lead an offense all on its own with Trae Young by his side.

Dybantsa will also have one of the best defensive bigs in modern history by his side. Davis might not be playing at the same level as he did in the bubble, but the Wizards center is still an elite rim protector when he’s healthy. Dybantsa has the defensive tools to be a capable defender in the NBA, but his focus tends to wane during games. He will have a safety net in Davis and Sarr protecting the paint in these lapses.

Dybantsa will also have some spacing around him. With shooters like Bub Carrington, Kyshawn George, and Tre Johnson around him, Dybantsa will have a lot of space to work in the midrange.

Overall, this looks like the perfect opportunity for both Dybantsa and the Wizards to thrive. Let’s see how far this team can go this season.
