There’s excitement in the air in DC, and there’s a good reason for it. After months of waiting, the Washington Wizards took the consensus first overall pick: BYU forward AJ Dybantsa. One of the most tantalizing prospects in this year’s draft, Dybantsa adds a ton of upside on a dark horse team in the Eastern Conference.
After being drafted, Dybantsa made his first post on social media. The new Wizards rookie reposted a video of him being selected first overall with a praying emoji. The reactions to the post were largely positive, with many Washington fans welcoming him to the team and expressing their excitement with the pick.

A 6’9 forward coming out of BYU, Dybantsa was the nation’s best scorer both in the stat sheet and through the eye test. He led the entire NCAA in scoring with 25.5 points per game while shooting efficiently at 51%. That high efficiency comes despite the high volume of shots he takes (17.3 field-goal attempts per game). The Wizards, who lack another shot creator alongside Trae Young, will appreciate that scoring ability. He’s able to get to his spots in the midrange and be effective, while also being a threat to attack the paint and knock down shots from deep.
Dybantsa isn’t just a one-trick pony, though. While it’s not his biggest strength, the incoming Wizards rookie is a capable passer when needed. He’s also a good rebounder. On the defensive end, Dybantsa has the tools to be a successful defender in the league, but his effort and positioning still needs work.
Overall, this is already a great draft for the Wizards, no matter what else happens. They’ve gotten the potential face of their franchise. Now, it’s up to Dybantsa to prove that the hype around him is completely warranted.
