Aces’ Becky Hammon mentions ‘wrong opinion’ amid backlash from Knicks fans

The Las Vegas Aces will aim for their ninth win in 10 outings when they take on the New York Liberty at Michelob ULTRA Arena on Tuesday.

The Aces are coming off back-to-back wins against the Golden State Valkyries and the Phoenix Mercury, improving their record to 12-4. The Liberty, meanwhile, suffered back-to-back defeats versus the Los Angeles Sparks and the Washington Mystics, dropping them to 11-6.

There is no love lost between the two teams. The Aces beat the Liberty in the WNBA Finals in 2023, while the Liberty exacted revenge by eliminating the Aces in the semifinals in 2024. Las Vegas coach Becky Hammon also threw shade at New York star Breanna Stewart during their championship parade in 2023.

Later that year, New York grew even angrier at Hammon, who starred for the Liberty during her playing career, after claiming that Jalen Brunson cannot lead the New York Knicks to the title because he was too small and not an “1A dude.” Clearly, she was proven wrong by Brunson.

Before battling the Liberty, Hammon opened her pregame conference with an interesting remark, as reported by The Athletic’s Annie Costabile.

“I was wrong. My opinion was wrong,” said Hammon.

It was unclear, however, if she was genuine or sarcastic, especially since they were facing New York. She has probably grown tired of the chatter about her and Brunson, who was named Finals MVP.

Hammon already stated that she will not apologize for her controversial statement, although she tipped her hat to Brunson, describing him as an “outlier.”

“You can put his name next to Steph Curry and Isiah Thomas, and I thought he played brilliantly, especially down the stretch. I mean, he was that 1A dude,” said Hammon.
