With the way their season has been going, the Phoenix Mercury will hold on to anything positive these days. Most recently, they found it from their former star.
Connecticut Sun center Brittney Griner became the WNBA’s all-time leader in blocks in their win over the Chicago Sky, 92-63, at Mohegan Sun Arena on Monday. She surpassed Margo Dydek, who had held the record since 2008.
Griner tallied four blocks to increase her total to 878 rejections. She also had 14 points, eight rebounds, and three assists.
Following her historic feat, the Mercury took to X to congratulate the eight-time blocks leader. Griner played in Phoenix from 2013 to 2024.
“The shots you blocked became highlights. The highlights became history,” read the post.
“We’re grateful we were able to witness so many of those moments in a Mercury jersey. Congratulations, BG.”

The 35-year-old Griner had her best years with the Mercury, including winning the title in 2014. She was drafted as the No. 1 pick out of Baylor and became a two-time Defensive Player of the Year, six-time All-WNBA Team member, seven-time All-Defensive Team member, 10-time All-Star, and two-time scoring champion.
Her one-two punch with former Mercury guard Diana Taurasi was nearly unstoppable, making Phoenix an annual contender.
In 2025, the Mercury were reluctant about committing to Griner. She left and signed with the Atlanta Dream. After one season, she joined the Sun on a one-year contract in April.
She is having a productive campaign with 12.3 points, 5.2 rebounds, 2.5 assists, and 1.9 blocks. The Sun, however, are languishing at the bottom of the standings with a 3-15 record. They broke their seven-game losing streak with their win against the Sky.
The Mercury are not doing much better with a 5-13 record.
