Wizards’ Trae Young offers to talk No. 3 jersey ‘later’ with AJ Dybantsa after Draft

The Washington Wizards are loading up, as they made the much-anticipated selection of AJ Dybantsa with the first overall pick of the 2026 NBA Draft. Dybantsa is joining a stacked Wizards young core that added veteran stars Trae Young and Anthony Davis, and they are now going to be expected to compete for a playoff spot during the 2026-27 campaign.

But for now, some housekeeping is in order. Dybantsa has made his intentions to wear the number three on his back upon his arrival in the NBA, but that desire of his is going to meet an obstacle in the form of Young, who decided to wear that jersey number upon his Wizards arrival via trade.

However, it seems as though Young is open to being the man to adjust. He nearly even did so live during NBA Draft night, but he just vowed to have that conversation with the Wizards youngster at a later time, as per Get More Sports on X.

Young has worn the number 11 for most of his playing career, having done so in high school and during his time in Oklahoma. This was the same jersey number he wore during his seven and a half seasons with the Atlanta Hawks, but he needed to make a drastic adjustment after his trade to the Wizards.

The Wizards have the number 11 hanging in the rafters, thanks to the great Elvin Hayes, who helped the franchise win their only title thus far back in 1978. Young decided to wear number three since this was his jersey number during his freshman year at high school. But looks as though Young is willing to accommodate for Dybantsa’s preference, as the BYU star wore that number during his formative basketball years.

This at least shows that Young is being a welcoming presence for the Wizards rookie, and he perhaps knows that there will potentially come a time where he has to defer to Dybantsa.
