Athletics’ Zack Gelof loses hitting streak after scary-looking hand injury vs Giants

Athletics second baseman Zach Gelof had a rough night in a series opener against the San Francisco Giants on Tuesday.

In the second inning of the game at Oracle Park in San Francisco, California, Gelof suffered an injury after Giants third baseman Matt Chapman stepped on his hand. The 26-year-old Athletics infielder immediately left the game following that collision, with veteran Jeff McNeil replacing him.

And with Gelof leaving the contest, his long hit streak has effectively ended. He entered the Giants series on a 24-game hit streak.

Before he exited, Gelof went just 0-for-1, as he was retired on a flyout in a leadoff at-bat in the first inning.

Nevertheless, Gelof is having a career year with the Athletics. He was batting .284/.338/.500 entering Tuesday, with 11 home runs and 29 RBIS to go along with eight stolen bases through 61 games. His patience with the bat has seemingly improved this year.

After posting a 45.5 percent strikeout rate (101 plate appearances) in 2025, he’s lowered that to below 25 percent, so far in the 2026 campaign.

For now, the concern with Gelof is his health, with the A’s hoping the injury is not serious enough to land him on the injured list.

If Gelof would need to miss time, McNeil figures to be a candidate to fill the spot at second base, as well as the likes of Max Muncy and Darell Hernaiz, who was recently sent to the minors.

The Athletics are looking to prevent a three-game losing skid in this matchup versus San Francisco after losing the final two games of their previous series at home against the Los Angeles Angels.
