Heyman’s post carried weight because it tied San Francisco’s frustration to the Red Sox’s decision to move Devers last year. The wording suggested the issue now stretches beyond one dugout disagreement.
The financial part complicates any deal. Devers’ contract runs through 2033 and still carries roughly $250 million, meaning the club would likely need to absorb significant salary to create a realistic trade path.
The Giants also risk losing leverage if rival teams believe the organization wants out. Any interested club could use that perception in negotiations before the deadline.
For president of baseball operations Buster Posey, the situation now becomes a test of direction. What once looked like a franchise-defining acquisition could become the clearest sign that the Giants are ready to reset.
