It was a busy day of trades in the NHL on Tuesday. Jordan Kyrou was sent from the St. Louis Blues to the Washington Capitals. Then, the San Jose Sharks moved William Eklund to the Ottawa Senators. Finally, the Buffalo Sabres sent Bowen Byram to the Chicago Blackhawks.
While the Sharks did complete a trade earlier in the day, they also almost made a deal that would have brought Byram to San Jose, according to Sheng Peng of San Jose Hockey Now.
“Hearing #SJSharks had ‘lots of interest’ in Byram. But unless you’re giving up the No. 2 pick, which I personally think is too rich, tough to beat the No. 4,” Peng wrote on X, formerly Twitter.
The Blackhawks acquired both Byram and Jordan Greenway. In exchange, they sent Louis Crevier, the 45th overall selection and the fourth pick in the 2026 NHL Draft, to the Sabres.
The Sharks had the draft capital to make a similar trade. They are in possession of the second overall pick in the draft, as well as the ninth and 27th picks. Still, the Sharks decided parting with the second pick in the draft was too much for Bryam, especially considering he has just one year left on his contract.
It is still possible that San Jose will look to make more moves before the NHL Draft, which begins on Friday. The Sharks are currently projected to select Ivar Stenberg out of Frolunda HC in the SHL with the second overall selection in the draft this week.
