Ole Miss football had a busy day on the college football recruiting trail. On Monday, Ben’Jarvius Shumaker fully committed to Ole Miss. He then flipped to Colorado before Shumaker flipped back to Ole Miss, all in the same day.
While Pete Golding and Ole Miss were working on securing Shumaker, they also landed another four-star defensive lineman, according to Hayes Fawcett of Rivals.
Mitchell Turner has committed to Ole Miss. The third-ranked defensive lineman in the class of 2027 chose the Rebels over Texas, Alabama, and LSU. Turner took an official visit to Ole Miss earlier in the month, which proved to be a pivotal moment in his recruitment, according to Chad Simmons of Rivals.
“On the official visit is the point when they moved ahead of Alabama for sure,” Turner told Rivals. “Being on that visit, spending more time with the coaches and just being there changed things. It was a big visit for me, and that really put Ole Miss as the top.”
The newest member of the Rebels also praised defensive line coach Randall Joyner.
“The way Coach Joyner breaks down things and coaches, the way he motivates people and gets them going make him one of the best,” Turner continued. “Coach Joyner’s track record of developing defensive linemen made Ole Miss always stand out. The way he develops players was a very big thing for me. The way he gets guys from my area — my state — to the NFL… how can you turn it down?”
Ultimately, it came down to Ole Miss and Alabama, but a few key factors played a role in Turner choosing to stay in Mississippi.
“It was very tough,” Turner added. “We had to talk with my mom and dad and figure out what was the best fit for my future. I’ve been there five or six times, and it’s a great environment. Staying in the state is big for me too. You see a lot of big-time guys leave Mississippi, but I want to leave my mark in my home state and create a legacy that can last for years. The development, staying home and the people. The people make the program wherever you go”
. Pete Golding and the Rebels now have 17 commitments for the class, ranking their class 17th in the nation and eighth in the SEC.
