Just days after getting arrested at Atlanta airport, former UFC fighter Dustin Poirier has opened up publicly about the recent unfortunate incident that went down and how he wants to go ahead from there.
The retired UFC star shared a personal message on his Instagram, where he acknowledged struggling with alcohol and how it has become a problem in his life. The 37-year-old was arrested in Atlanta and later released on bail.
The statement was released soon after the footage of the incident was made public. Although the arrest had already brought Poirier into the spotlight, his recent message drew focus to something far more personal. Rather than dismissing what happened, Poirier came out honest and asked for help in improving himself.
“I’m at the point where I need some help, walking away from fighting hasn’t been easy on me and alcohol isn’t the answer,” Poirier wrote. “It has ruined my father’s life and I will not allow it to ruin mine, my family deserve me at 100%. I’m trying to do everything I can to get my mind right and take the right next steps.” In Georgia, public drunkenness is a misdemeanor that carries punishments of up to one year in jail, up to $1,000.
Poirier, a former UFC interim lightweight champion, retired from UFC last year as one of the most popular and respected MMA fighters in the industry. Following his UFC debut in 2011, Poirier won 22 of 32 fights. His celebrated portfolio includes wins over Conor McGregor, Max Holloway, and Justin Gaethje, and many more.
