From a roster construction standpoint, a reunion with star reliever Aroldis Chapman would make sense for the New York Yankees. Of course, the Yankees rarely make trades with the Boston Red Sox, so a deal would already be difficult. There is another factor to consider when it comes to the idea of Chapman returning to New York, however.
Chapman believes the Yankees need to apologize to him for what occurred in 2022 if a trade were to occur. More specifically, he wants an apology from general manager Brian Cashman, who accused Chapman of insubordination after the pitcher missed a mandatory practice and was ultimately left off the 2022 playoff roster. Chapman said he received permission to miss the practice.
Yankees manager Aaron Boone later said Chapman is not owed an apology.
So, getting back to the original subject, a trade does make sense from a roster standpoint. MLB insider Jon Heyman believes the apology situation will stand in the way of a deal coming to fruition, however.
“No apology forthcoming so it won’t be the Yankees,” Heyman said on MLB Network. “… Not likely the Yankees, they have a little bit of a misunderstanding and it doesn’t look like either side is gonna get over it.”
Chapman is still probably going to be a trade candidate, though.
“But Aroldis Chapman could be the best closer out on the market,” Heyman added.
He may not end up with the Yankees, but the Red Sox — who are trending toward selling at the trade deadline — will likely consider making Chapman available for a potential deal. Plenty of contenders would love to acquire a veteran closer with a proven track record.
