On Tuesday night, the NBA Draft took place from Brooklyn, with AJ Dybantsa being the first pick by the Washington Wizards. Each draft cycle, numerous players with high hopes ultimately end up falling or going undrafted entirely, which continued in this year’s draft.
Recently, NBA insider Jeff Goodman took to social media to highlight some of those players and put their agents on blast for the bad advice they gave them.
“With the 1st round complete, 3 guys that had eligibility and opted to remain in the draft that were not selected: Isaiah Evans (Duke)- Agent Thad Foucher of Wasserman, Henri Veesaar (UNC) – Agent Jason Ranne of Wasserman, Meleek Thomas (Arkansas) – Agent Sam Permut of Roc Nation,” wrote Goodman on X, formerly Twitter.
“Sam Permut was also the agent for RJ Luis – who remained in the draft a year ago, went undrafted and turned down a TON of money to return to college. And now Luis wants to come back to college even after signing a two-way deal,” he added.
Players and agents getting overzealous and overestimating draft stock has become a trend in recent years, with college eligibility rules beginning to tighten and controversy arising after some attempt to go back to school after going undrafted. With the NBA as competitive as ever, it’s important that agents and players get a good grip on the level of interest teams truly have in them before making a decision to declare for the draft, although there are several prominent NBA players who have carved out nice careers for themselves after going undrafted.
Perhaps Evans, Veesaar, and Thomas will find more luck in the second round of the draft on Wednesday.
