Mets’ Francisco Lindor set to return, Juan Soto could land on IL

The New York Mets are scheduled to have a doubleheader against the Chicago Cubs on Wednesday, with the first game beginning at 1:10 p.m. EST. Leading up to the two matchups, manager Carlos Mendoza shared an injury update for both Francisco Lindor and Juan Soto.

Lindor, who has been dealing with a strained left calf since April, is finally set to return to action, according to Jorge Castillo of ESPN. Mendoza claimed that the 32-year-old shortstop will take the field for the second game of Wednesday’s doubleheader, which begins at 7:10 p.m. EST.

“The plan is for Francisco Lindor to be activated for the second game of today’s doubleheader, Carlos Mendoza said,” reported Castillo.

This will be Lindor’s first game back since April 22. Having the 12-year veteran back in the infield will be a nice addition to the roster. Francisco Lindor enters Wednesday’s matchup with 24 games played so far this season. Through 93 at-bats, he has recorded 21 hits, two home runs, and five RBIs, giving him a .226 batting average and .314 OBP.

As for Soto, the Mets are not ruling out a trip to the IL, per Castillo. The 27-year-old outfielder is struggling with a back injury, and some time away from the team might be what is best for his recovery. A decision will be made after Wednesday, and Soto is not expected to play in either contest in the doubleheader.

“Carlos Mendoza didn’t rule out Juan Soto going on the injured list with his back issue,” claimed Castillo. “That will be determined after he’s evaluated today.”

Losing the four-time All-Star would be a tough blow for a Mets team ranked last in the NL East. He has been one of the most consistent producers at the plate this season, owning a .299 batting average and .395 OBP with 66 hits, 17 home runs, and 38 RBIs.
