It has been a difficult season for the Boston Red Sox, as they sit in last place in the AL East. They have also dealt with plenty of injuries, including one to Red Sox outfielder Roman Anthony.
Now, Anthony is receiving an update on his return to the lineup, according to Tim Healey of The Boston Globe.
“Roman Anthony (sprained right wrist/hand) hasn’t made any substantive progress while the Red Sox have been away, Chad Tracy said. He occasionally tries to swing a lighter bat but hasn’t gotten to a real bat/hitting progression,” Healey posted on X, formerly Twitter.
Anthony has not played since being injured against the Detroit Tigers on May 4. He was not having the best season before the injury. The 22-year-old was hitting just .222 with a home run and five RBIs.
Anthony was selected with the 79th overall pick of the 2022 MLB Draft by the Red Sox. He would start his professional career at the Rookie-level Florida Complex League Red Sox, before moving up to the Single-A level. He would be ranked as a top prospect in 2024 and be invited to spring training in 2025. While he did not make the roster out of spring training, he would make his debut at the major league level in 2025, at just 21 years old.
In his rookie campaign, he played in 71 games, hitting .292 with a .396 on-base percentage. He also had eight home runs and 32 RBIs.
The team would love to have Anthony back in the lineup. The Red Sox are just 32-45 on the year, which places them 14.5 games out of first in the AL East. They continue their series with the Rockies on Wednesday.
