Mets rumors: New York mentioned as Willson Contreras trade suitor despite brutal season

The New York Mets have been a trainwreck through the first half of the 2026 MLB season, currently sitting at 34-44 ahead of Wednesday’s game against the Chicago Cubs. The Mets have performed well below their projections this year despite having one of the most expensive payrolls in baseball and legit championship expectations entering the season.

Still, that doesn’t mean the Mets will necessarily be sellers at the upcoming MLB trade deadline. Recently, New York was named as a suitor for star first baseman Willson Contreras of the Boston Red Sox, who have been an even bigger disaster than the Mets so far this year.

“Any blame that can be assigned for Boston’s disappointing season can’t be sent in Contreras’ direction. The slugger has been one of the bright lights for the Red Sox in 2026,” reported Mark Feinsand of MLB.com.

However, Feinsand did note that “…with two-plus years of club control remaining, the Red Sox seem unlikely to trade him this summer. Of course, that will also be his call in the end — he has full no-trade rights for the rest of this year. For next season (and 2028, if his option is exercised), he will have limited no-trade rights, allowing him to block a trade to 10 teams annually.”

He went on to list the Mets, Cleveland Guardians, and Texas Rangers as potential suitors for Contreras’ services.

If they could get him for the right price, Conteras would certainly help the Mets out in the short term, but it’s unclear how sustainable his hot streak of play will be over the long haul at the age of 34.

Still, for a Mets team that is grasping at straws and trying to get back into the contention mix in the NL East, it may be a deal worth making.
