Finally, after nearly a decade, we know why PGA Tour standout golfer Wyndham Clark “hates” Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield, and it’s due to his ex-girlfriend cheating on him.
Appearing on Pardon My Take, Clark was asked about his tweet from Dec. 3, 2016, which simply read, “I hate Baker Mayfield.” Clark, after looking at his publicity team, explained that the reason he disliked him was that his former partner had cheated on him with May.

“My girlfriend at the time cheated on me with Baker Mayfield, but here’s what I will say — I’m actually a Baker fan now,” he conceded. “I think he’s a homie. That’s your initial response, but really, it’s ‘screw [your girlfriend].'”
Does Wyndham Clark still “hate” Baker Mayfield?
Luckily, he doesn’t feel the same these days. He hopes that he and Mayfield can link up and play some golf, as perhaps the Buccaneers quarterback didn’t know he was hooking up with Clark’s ex-girlfriend.
Time heals all wounds. It sounds like Clark is no longer with his ex-girlfriend, who cheated on him, and Mayfield and his wife, Emily Wilkinson, recently welcomed their second child, Maverick Thorne Mayfield, in April 2026.
Mayfield is entering his ninth season in the NFL and his fourth with the Bucs. At the time of Clark’s post, he was still at Oklahoma as the Sooners’ starting quarterback.
He is coming off a disappointing season after having a career year in 2024. Mayfield passed for 3,693 yards, 26 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions in 2025. One year earlier, he had passed for a career-high 4,500 yards and 41 touchdowns.
Clark, meanwhile, is playing on the PGA Tour. Previously, he won two major championships at the 2023 and 2026 U.S. Opens. Before entering the pros, he played college golf at Oklahoma State and Oregon. He earned a PGA Tour membership in 2018, one year after going pro in 2017.
