Fred Hammond to perform at Gospel Explosion during 2026 Gulf Coast Challenge

Following a hit performance at NPR’s Tiny Desk in honor of Black Music Month, Fred Hammond is set to get another big stage at a huge HBCU event this fall. Hammond is set to perform at The Gospel Explosion during the 2026 Gulf Coast Challenge weekend.

Hammond’s performance highlights the opening night of a weekend designed to celebrate HBCU culture beyond the football field. In addition to the concert, Thursday’s schedule includes a College and Career Fair expected to welcome students from more than 35 high schools across Alabama and neighboring states, giving prospective students an opportunity to connect with colleges and explore career opportunities.

The festivities continue on Friday with a team luncheon featuring student-athletes, alumni, and supporters before HBCU Fest takes center stage later that evening. Saturday’s events begin with the annual Gulf Coast Challenge Parade through downtown Mobile before the rivalry matchup kicks off at 4 p.m.

The Gulf Coast Challenge has become one of the marquee matchups on the HBCU calendar. The game features a divisional rivalry between Jackson State and Alabama A&M, who in the past have jostled over positioning in the SWAC East Division.

Jackson State has dominated the matchup since Alabama A&M beat the Tigers during the spring 2021 football season. Jackson State also emerged victorious against Alabama A&M 57-24 in last year’s Gulf Coast Challenge in Sam Shade’s first season with the program. Alabama A&M looks to remain competitive, likely using this matchup against a contender such as Jackson State as a measuring stick for its contender status.
