The New York Mets reached another low Wednesday, and starting pitcher Sean Manaea did not try to soften the reality after a doubleheader sweep.
The Mets dropped both games to the Chicago Cubs, extending its losing streak to five games and falling to 34-46. The nightcap became the uglier result, a 10-5 loss shaped by six defensive errors and more frustration for a team now 12 games under .500.
Manaea started Game 2 and spent much of his outing trying to pitch through mistakes behind him. He threw 86 pitches in just over three innings while allowing four runs, only three earned because of the defensive breakdowns.
SNY Mets shared Manaea’s postgame comments on X, formerly Twitter, after he described the mood inside the clubhouse following the sweep.
“It’s not good, we’re playing not up to our capabilities.. we know we’re better than this and just right now we’re playing really, really bad baseball”

The quote matched what unfolded on the field. Francisco Lindor, Marcus Semien, Bo Bichette, and Mark Vientos combined for six errors, allowing Chicago to score five unearned runs and control the game without hitting a home run.
The Mets did produce enough offense to stay in the game. Francisco Alvarez, AJ Ewing, Bichette, and Vientos each homered, giving New York power that should have created a different final score.
Instead, the defense erased those swings. Routine plays turned into extended innings, and the Cubs capitalized on every opportunity New York gave them.
The veteran southpaw’s comments mattered because they came from a player who has seen winning baseball. He did not offer excuses or point to one play. Manaea acknowledged the Mets are falling short of their standard.
For New York, the next step is time-sensitive. Until the club cleans up its fundamentals, the frustration inside the clubhouse will continue to match the results.
