Former Nebraska guard Sam Hoiberg has quickly landed an NBA opportunity after going unselected in the 2026 NBA Draft. Hoiberg intends to sign a free-agent contract with the Phoenix Suns, giving the 23-year-old a chance to begin his professional career in Phoenix, according to NBA insider Jake Fischer.
The Suns were relatively quiet during the draft itself. Phoenix traded up to select Koa Peat with the No. 30 overall pick and later moved its No. 47 selection, leaving the organization without a second-round pick. Shortly after the draft concluded, the franchise turned its attention to the undrafted market and reached an agreement with Hoiberg. The move was later confirmed by his agency, Priority Sports, while Hoiberg also shared the news on social media.
Hoiberg arrives in Phoenix following the most productive season of his college career. The 6-foot guard earned Big Ten All-Defensive Team honors and was also named an honorable mention All-Big Ten selection after starting all 35 games for Nebraska during the 2025-26 campaign.
In his senior season, Hoiberg averaged 9.3 points, 5.3 rebounds, 4.5 assists and 2.0 steals per game. He finished with career-best numbers across multiple categories while playing more than 32 minutes per contest. His efficiency also stood out, as he shot 55% from the field, 38.1% from three-point range and 75% from the free-throw line. He also stepped up on defense, bumping his steals from 1.4 per game to 2.0 compared to last season.
One of the most impressive statistical achievements of Hoiberg’s final year at Nebraska was his 3.75-to-1 assist-to-turnover ratio, the best single-season mark in program history.
The son of former NBA player and longtime head coach Fred Hoiberg, Sam spent five years with the Nebraska Cornhuskers after arriving as a walk-on and redshirting during the 2021-22 season. His role expanded steadily before he became a full-time starter and a reliable contributor on a Nebraska team that reached the Sweet Sixteen. During the Cornhuskers’ 74-72 Round of 32 winover Vanderbilt, Hoiberg contributed eight points and eight assists as Nebraska advanced to the tournament’s second weekend for the first time in program history.
The Suns have recently added backcourt depth by re-signing Jordan Goodwin and Collin Gillespie, and Hoiberg will now look to earn a place in the organization as he takes the next step from college basketball to the NBA.
