Oregon football is trending up once again on the College Football Recruiting front. The Ducks already swooped up four-star linebacker Toa Satele to boost the 2027 class. Now coach Dan Lanning and company landed two new recruits, including tight end George VanSandt who turns down Arkansas and Texas A&M.
The local target out of Portland revealed his decision to stay home via Hayes Fawcett of On3/Rivals Monday. The 6-foot-5 target also turned down the chance to play for College Football Playoff team Tulane for the Ducks.
But he rises as a massive win for Lanning and the Ducks coaching staff for this reason: Beating out the nation’s top-ranked 2027 class.
Texas A&M owns No. 1 for both the 247Sports and On3/Rivals team rankings. Now the big tight end adds to a steadily growing ’27 crew spearheaded by Lanning and his revamped staff.
Promoted offensive coordinator Drew Mehringer emerges as a big winner here too. Mehringer previously coached the Ducks tight end room before replacing Will Stein as OC. Stein landed the head coach opening for Kentucky, leading to Mehringer’s job elevation. Mehringer recently turned Kenyon Sadiq into a first round selection to the New York Jets, so VanSandt is now in great hands with him.
But he’s not the only verbal commit on this Monday. Oregon, Lanning, Mehringer and wide receivers coach Ross Douglas helped flip three-star wide receiver Malachi Garlington from Washington State. The Happy Valley, Oregon native visited Eugene during the weekend of June 6, helping lead to his change of heart. Garlington becomes the first wideout pledge for the Ducks.
