Warriors’ Al Horford makes history with new $14 million contract

Al Horford is not ready to ride off into the sunset yet, as he is primed to sign a contract extension with the Golden State Warriors.

The Warriors acquired Horford last year after being released by the Boston Celtics. He provided a steadying presence and a respected voice, although Golden State fell short of qualifying for the playoffs.

ESPN’s Shams Charania broke the story of Horford’s plan to stay in the Bay Area.

“Golden State’s Al Horford is declining his player option and intends to sign a new two-year, $14 million deal to stay with the Warriors, sources tell me and @anthonyVslater,” wrote Charania on X.

“Horford, 40, becomes only the 13th player in NBA history to reach 20 seasons.”

The veteran center appeared in only 45 games this season due to nagging ailments and recovery issues. He averaged career-lows of 8.3 points, 4.9 rebounds, and 21.5 minutes.

Still, Horford had his moments, most notably in the Play-In Tournament against the Los Angeles Clippers, wherein he waxed hot from three-point distance in the fourth quarter to help the Warriors complete a come-from-behind win.

The Warriors were derailed by the season-ending knee injury of Jimmy Butler. He is expected to be ready by next season and team up with Horford, Stephen Curry, Draymond Green, and Kristaps Porzingis in their quest to return to the NBA Finals.

“Me being here a year, being acclimated with (Steve) Kerr, with Steph, with everybody else, I feel like we can continue to take steps forward and have a better season,” said Horford in a separate report from Charania.

LeBron James, Vince Carter, Chris Paul, Dirk Nowitzki, Kevin Garnett, Kevin Willis, Robert Parish, Kyle Lowry, Udonis Haslem, Jamal Crawford, Kobe Bryant, and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar are the other players who reached 20 seasons.
