NHL rumors: Flames actively trying to trade former 1st-round pick

The Calgary Flames are coming off another disappointing season, finishing second-to-last in the Pacific Division. This has led the team to consider overhauling the roster, with the Flames having very few untouchable players.

Now, the team is taking a former first-round pick and not making him untouchable; instead, they’re shopping him around, according to Darren Dreger of TSN.

“The Flames are trying to move Connor Zary. 24 year old forward has another year left on his contract at $3.775 mil. Sounds like Calgary is asking for a 2nd round pick in return,” Dreger posted on X, formerly Twitter.

Zary was the 24th overall selection of the 2020 NHL Draft by the Flames. He would make his NHL debut with the team in 2023-24, scoring a goal against the Dallas Stars in his first game. He would go on to play 63 games that season, finding the back of the net 14 times while adding 20 helpers. Those are still career highs, as Zary has struggled since.

In 2024-25, he played just 54 games with 13 goals and 14 assists. This past season is was 74 games, but just 12 goals and 12 assists for the center. Zary just completed the first year of a three-year deal he signed ahead of the 2025 season. It still has two years left on the contract at an AAV of $3.775 million. At the end of the deal, he will be a restricted free agent.

The Flames are looking for draft capital in return, something they currently have plenty of. They will pick twice in the first round of the 2026 NHL Draft on Friday, and then three more times in the second round before twice in the third. They also have two second-round picks in 2027 and 2028.
