Hornets rumors: LaMelo Ball trade points to Coby White re-signing, other potential bombshell moves

The Charlotte Hornets’ blockbuster trade involving LaMelo Ball may only be the beginning of a transformative offseason.

After sending Ball and Josh Green to the Minnesota Timberwolves in exchange for Naz Reid, an unprotected 2033 first-round pick, three first-round pick swaps and three second-round picks on Thursday, Charlotte significantly improved its salary cap flexibility. The move has fueled speculation that re-signing guard Coby White could be one of the organization’s next priorities.

NBA salary cap analyst Yossi Gozlan outlined Charlotte’s financial outlook following the trade in a post on X, formerly known as Twitter.

“Charlotte Hornets salary cap situation after trading LaMelo Ball and Josh Green for Naz Reid and picks.

$75 million in room below the luxury tax line.

Enough room to re-sign Coby White, use the entirety of their $40.8 million trade exception, and $15 million mid-level.”

The figures illustrate just how much financial flexibility the Hornets gained by moving Ball’s contract. In addition to creating a pathway toward retaining White, Charlotte now has the resources to pursue further upgrades through trades or free agency without approaching the luxury tax threshold.

White emerged as an important contributor after arriving from the Chicago Bulls at the February trade deadline. In 21 games with Charlotte, he averaged 15.6 points, three rebounds and three assists while shooting 46.1% from the field, 39.1% from 3-point range and 83.9% from the free-throw line despite averaging just 19.3 minutes per game.

His efficient production and scoring ability made him one of the Hornets’ most productive backcourt players down the stretch, giving the organization another reason to prioritize a new contract.

Charlotte’s front office also holds a $40.8 million trade exception, providing another avenue to reshape the roster. Combined with approximately $75 million in room below the luxury tax and access to the full $15 million mid-level exception, the Hornets have multiple mechanisms available to continue adding talent around Reid and the team’s young core.

The trade itself marked the end of the Ball era after six seasons with the franchise. While Reid gives Charlotte an established frontcourt presence, the extensive draft compensation and newfound cap flexibility suggest the Hornets are far from finished making moves.

Whether the next step is securing White’s future, absorbing another sizable contract through the trade exception or pursuing additional impact players, Charlotte enters the remainder of the offseason with considerably more flexibility than it possessed before Thursday’s franchise-altering deal.
