Panthers trade for Flyers enforcer after Brady Tkachuk deal

Just days after making a trade for Brady Tkachuk, the Florida Panthers are back at it. They have traded two draft picks to the Philadelphia Flyers for enforcer Garnet Hathaway, according to a team announcement. Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman was the first to break the news.

“We have acquired a fifth-round pick in the 2026 NHL Draft and a fourth-round pick in the 2027 NHL Draft from Florida in exchange for forward Garnet Hathaway and a sixth-round pick in the 2026 NHL Draft,” The Flyers announced.

The Flyers picked up the 136th overall pick in this weekend’s draft and a fourth-round pick in next year’s draft in the deal. They did acquire the 181st pick in this year’s draft. According to Friedman, Philadelphia also retained half of Hathaway’s salary. He will count for $1.2 million against the cap for both teams for the 2026-27 season. After that, he will be an unrestricted free agent.

The Panthers won two Stanley Cups in a row based on their physicality and timely scoring. Hathaway brings the physicality they need, with at least 250 hits in each of the last five seasons. Both Tkachuk brothers bring the boom as well, but have offensive upside that makes them stars in the league. Hathaway is an enforcer first, and will bring that energy to Florida.

The Panthers have two second-round picks, one fourth-rounder, two sixth-rounders, and a seventh-rounder in the 2026 draft. Their focus is on this year’s team and a chance to win a third Stanley Cup in four years, so those picks could be on the move too. Hathaway does not bring much offense, scoring only three points last year, but can still help them come playoff time.
