Amid the Memphis Grizzlies’ attempts to trade Ja Morant reports, ESPN’s Brian Windhorst offered some perspective on the direction in which the franchise is heading. The Grizzlies, who selected Cam Boozer with the third overall pick in this week’s NBA Draft, is actively trying to move on from the remaining piece of the previous era, led by Morant.
However, finding the ideal trade suitor for Morant could take time, as Windhorst noted, per ESPN’s Unsportsmanlike.
“Flagrantly available — couldn’t be more available,” Windhorst said. “If Ja had one year on his contract, I think he would have been traded months ago. That is a reasonable risk. He is super motivated to have a big-time year, but he got two years on his contract. So, if you trade it, and it doesn’t work out, you’re left with an unpalatable about of risk. This thing about is, Memphis is pivoting. They’re done with this. They’ve traded Bane. They traded Jackson. They want to make Cam Boozer the centerpiece of their team.”

Brian Windhorst says Ja Morant’s Grizzlies days were numbered

ESPN’s Brian Windhorst isn’t surprised by Ja Morant’s trade rumors. The Grizzlies have a talented young core, of which Cam Boozer was added to, and is expected to be a franchise pillar moving forward into the future. For Windhorst, there’s no doubt that the Grizzlies will part ways with Morant, it’s just a matter of time, he said, per NBA on ESPN.
“It’s not really a question for the Grizzlies; they’re going to really try to trade him,” Windhorst said. “I think we probably have seen the last moments of Ja Morant in a Grizzlies uniform. It just depends on how it’s going to play itself out. They are looking to totally reset their franchise. Cam Boozer’s selection at number three is part of that.”
