NBA rumors: Pistons slapped with harsh Karwhi Leonard trade reality

As rumors surround Los Angeles Clippers star Kawhi Leonard this offseason, as his name has been involved in a myriad of trade rumors, the one team that people have been speculating that will make a deal is the Detroit Pistons. While rumors will continue to cloud Leonard, this NBA insider gives a reality check for any Pistons fans who were hoping their team would win a potential sweepstakes.

Jake Fischer of The Stein Line would speak on how teams want to be sure that Leonard would sign a contract extension after a deal and not walk away on a prior deal, as he did with the Toronto Raptors after winning a championship. With that, Fischer would report that Leonard “would not have an interest in signing an extension with Detroit.”

“Sources say that Leonard would not have interest in signing an extension with Detroit in the event that the Pistons traded for him this summer. Sources say he has a similar view regarding a long-term partnership with the Heat if Miami had any designs on pursuing Leonard to slot alongside Antetokounmpo and Bam Adebayo,” Fischer wrote.

The two teams that Kawhi Leonard would consider signing extension with

There is no denying that after the Miami Heat traded for Giannis Antetokounmpo, Leonard is the top target for any team in the offseason, though a trade could be wasteful if the star wouldn’t stay long-term. While it seems that Leonard wants to stay with the Clippers, the two teams he’d “consider signing an extension with” are the two teams he’s played for: the Raptors and the San Antonio Spurs, via Fischer.

Starting with Toronto, the franchise has made strides recently, led by Scottie Barnes, and including Leonard, which could have fans dreaming of another championship. As for the Spurs, Leonard got his start with the team and emerged as a top star throughout his time from 2011 to 2018.

Leonard is still elite at 34 years old, though health is always a factor, but last season with Los Angeles saw him play 65 games and average 27.9 points. It remains to be seen what happens with Leonard.
