The New York Knicks are the 2026 NBA champions, but as the offseason is now in full swing, their attention turns to trying to keep their title-winning roster together as free agency approaches. One player who is sure to draw heavy interest from opposing teams during the free agency period is Knicks’ big man Mitchell Robinson.
Mitchell Robinson is entering unrestricted free agency, and following his strong performance in the playoffs, especially in the NBA Finals against San Antonio Spurs star Victor Wembanyama, teams in need of a reliable center will no doubt come calling. Re-signing Robinson will increase the Knicks’ payroll, and ESPN NBA analyst Brian Windhorst believes there’s a chance he isn’t back amid owner James Dolan’s mandate.
“They’re trying to find ways to stay under the second apron. That is Jim Dolan’s mandate. It’s not so much that he’s afraid to spend. I think that what they’re afraid to do is get locked in to their roster,” Windhorst said during a recent ESPN segment. “There is a number on Mitch Robinson that they’re not gonna match … I would say Mitch Robinson is … 51-49 to come back, but that’s open that he might not be there. But the Knicks are working on it.”
The No. 36 overall pick in the 2018 NBA Draft, Robinson hasn’t always been healthy for the Knicks, but this past season he appeared in 60 games, the third-highest mark of his career. Despite a finger injury during the playoffs, he was still able to play and be effective.
During the team’s postseason run, he averaged 4.8 points and 5.5 rebounds while shooting 67.3 percent from the field.
