As the New York Mets lost to the Chicago Cubs on Wednesday, 10-5, it marked the team’s fifth straight loss in what has been a frustrating season for the ball club. While Mets fans are likely complaining about the team this season, it was on full display on Wednesday, as an interesting chant led to many social media reactions.
At the top of the ninth inning, as New York was down 8-5 on a 2-1 count with Mets pitcher Devin Williams on the mound, fans started to loudly chant former player Pete Alonso’s name after the team lost out on him last offseason.
“Mets fans are chanting ‘Pete Alonso’ at Citi Field as the team is about to suffer its fifth loss in a row in a game where they committed six errors,” Jomboy Media wrote on X, formerly Twitter.

Social media reactions to Mets fans chanting Pete Alonso
Under this post by Jomboy Media, there was a myriad of different responses, like one reply from “ThatNYsportsguy” that said the fans should “grow up and move on.”
“Grow up and move on. He was great. He wasn’t Barry Bonds or Shohei Ohtani,” the user on X, formerly Twitter, wrote.
Other fans were agreeing with the fans chanting Alonso and reminding the Mets that letting him walk was a questionable decision.
“I hope he sees this vid. I hope he understands how much he was appreciated by most of us. Never forgive Cohen & Stearns,” @AAARPGodess wrote on X.
Another was mentioning the irony of Williams at the mound, which was a signing that New York made after Alonso signed with the Baltimore Orioles.
“Starting that chant while Devin Williams was on the mound was as personal as it gets. Steve Cohen and David Stearns should NOT walk around Queens in the near future at all,” JMNYC wrote on X.
At any rate, it seems that Mets fans won’t ever live down the decision to let Alonso walk, as it remains to be seen if New York can recover this season with a 34-46 record, putting them last in the NL East.
