John Chayka has been busy in his first offseason as the general manager of the Toronto Maple Leafs. He has already made two trades, while preparing to make the first pick in the NHL Draft. Further, it was reported that more trades for the Maple Leafs were imminent.
Now, Chayka is giving some insight into one of the potential trade candidates, per Jesse Blake of SDPN.
Chayka was asked if a trade involving Morgan Rielly was imminent.
“No, but again, those are the discussions we continue to have,” the Leafs GM responded.
A coming trade for the long-time member of the Maple Leafs has long been expected. Rielly was the 5th overall selection of the 2012 NHL Draft by the Maple Leafs and made his debut with the club in the 2013-14 season. Since then, he has played in 951 games, scoring 98 goals and adding 451 assists.
After the Leafs missed the playoffs for the first time since 2015-16, there was a shake-up to both the front office and the coaching staff. This has also led to the Maple Leafs looking to revamp their roster, and Rielly may not be part of the future plans.
Rielly still has four years left on his contract, at an AAV of $7.5 million. To help facilitate a possible move, Rielly submitted a four-team list of teams in which he would accept a trade. All four are Western Conference teams, with two suspected to be the San Jose Sharks and the Anaheim Ducks. Until a trade is finalized, though, it will be a wait-and-see approach for Rielly and the Maple Leafs.
