The Charlotte Hornets made a surprising move on Thursday when they opted to trade point guard LaMelo Ball to the Minnesota Timberwolves in exchange for Naz Reid and draft compensation. The Hornets will now move forward without their former franchise point guard, having already signed Coby White to an extension in the hours since the deal
One person who is predictably favorable of the trade from the Hornets’ perspective is FS1 sports media personality Nick Wright, who recently broke down why he thinks Charlotte won the deal.
“Congratulations to the Charlotte Hornets for making a tough decision when they needed to make it… I don’t understand what Minnesota is doing, even if you like the talent more than I do in LaMelo Ball,” said Wright, per First Things First on X, formerly Twitter.
Wright has come under fire for his overtly personal insults against Ball over the last year, so he isn’t exactly the most unbiased source of information or opinions when it comes to the point guard. Wright also mentioned Ball’s impending eligiblity for a contract extension, as well as his lack of playoff experience, as reasons why the Hornets came out as victors in this deal in his view.
Ball finished second in the NBA last year in total threes made behind only his teammate, Rookie of the Year runner-up Kon Knueppel. The Hornets now have a talented, floor-spacing big man in Reid to add to the team, and many expect that they will look to make a move involving power forward Miles Bridges, who is on an expiring contract, as the offseason continues.
While Minnesota took a big swing in trying to give Anthony Edwards a legit number two option, clearly, Wright thinks the Timberwolves swung and missed on this deal, while the Hornets hit a home run.
