As rumors surround San Francisco Giants star Matt Chapman ahead of the MLB trade deadline, the third baseman was a part of the unfortunate injury to Athletics infielder Zack Gelof in Tuesday’s game. As the Athletics third baseman suffered a hand injury in the 3-1 loss for the Giants on Tuesday, Chapman was the cause, as he would give the 26-year-old a thoughtful gift.
In Tuesday’s aforementioned loss for San Francisco in the bottom of the second inning, Chapman would hit a line drive to left field that hit the wall quickly, and when he was going for second base, he accidentally stepped on Gelof’s hand with his cleats. This would lead to Gelof’s exit from the game, which was a disappointment, as it ended a 24-game hit streak, but Chapman would gift him a bottle of wine on Thursday.
“Zack Gelof’s swelling on his right hand has gone down a little bit. He also showed up to the ballpark today to a nice bottle of wine at his locker as a gift from Matt Chapman,” Martin Gallegos of MLB.com wrote on X, formerly Twitter.

As mentioned, Gelof had been on a tear before Chapman’s cleat accidentally injured his hand, as he had recorded a .282 batting average to go along with 11 home runs and 29 RBIs. Here’s hoping that the wine could ease the senses of Gelof and come back even better, as the Athletics decided to put the young infielder on the 10-day injured list (IL) on Thursday.
At any rate, the Giants are looking for any positivity in their underwhelming season, as the team us 33-46 record, which puts them fourth in the NL West ahead of the series finale against the Athletics on Thursday afternoon.
