The Los Angeles Lakers have already made some big decisions this offseason, recently signing Austin Reaves on a max contract extension to keep him around long-term. The Lakers will now have to decide how much money they’re willing to offer LeBron James in his upcoming free agency.
For a team built around Reaves and Luka Doncic, priority number one will be surrounding the two offensive stars with length and athleticism on defense, and some are wondering if Andrew Wiggins of the Miami Heat could be an option in free agency, as the wing has a $30.2 million player option for the upcoming season.
Recently, ClutchPoints NBA insider Brett Siegel reported on if Los Angeles could be a feasible option for the former number one overall pick.
“I fully expect him to be with the Heat. By some chance, if he were to become a free agent… there could be a team out there that says, ‘Hey, we’re willing to offer you $30 million a year…’ I look at the Los Angeles Lakers, because they have a ton of cap space. They’re looking to still be an aggressive, championship-like team after re-signing Austin Reaves… they’ve been pursuing Wiggins over the last year and a half,” he said, per ClutchPoints on X, formerly Twitter.
Siegel also mentioned Wiggins as a possible Rui Hachimura replacement for Los Angeles if the wing were to depart the Lakers this summer.
While he may not have quite the value that he did during his 2022 NBA Finals run with the Golden State Warriors, Wiggins is still a strong perimeter defender who can knock down jumpers and provide versatility on both ends of the floor, and the Lakers would seemingly have no choice but to explore signing him if he were to become available.
