The Edmonton Oilers have their new head coach in Mike Babcock, and despite the reviews he may have gotten from his past experiences, the organization believes he is a good person. Zach Hyman is one of the players who is a fan of Babcock, as he played under him when he was with the Toronto Maple Leafs.
Hyman knows what kind of person that Babcock is, and he strongly believes that he is the man for the Oilers job.
“I had a phenomenal experience with him and a lot of our young players did,” Hyman said via Robert Tychkowski of the Edmonton Journal. “He believed in me when not many people did. He believed I could help really good star players and get them the puck and forecheck. He found a role for me and did the same for a lot of guys.”
Hyman noted that most of the players who were under Babcock when he coached the Maple Leafs are still playing, and it’s because of the foundation that he built.
“I always felt like we were the most prepared group from an Xs and Os standpoint. We knew exactly what we had to do every night. Every player knew their role, every player valued their role, every player was valued. I had a phenomenal experience with him,” Hyman said.
Babcock was investigated before being hired by the Oilers, as the NHLPA wanted to look back at a scandal that forced him to step down as the head coach of the Columbus Blue Jackets in 2023. There was no substantial evidence about Babcock from that time, and Babcock was cleared to return to coaching.
It’s a good thing for Babcock that somebody such as Hyman was able to speak highly of him in the Oilers organization, and now he will have to show others what kind of person he is.
